New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday alleged that the Modi government was keeping consumers in the dark about the ethanol blend in petrol. Referring to test findings from Karnataka, he claimed that several fuel samples contained ethanol in excess of the permitted 20 per cent limit.

He called on the Centre to make public the actual ethanol content in petrol sold across the country and take strict action against companies found breaching the prescribed limit.

In a post in Hindi on X, Gandhi said, “E20 turned into 420 – stealing petrol from the public’s cars!” The remark referred to Section 420 of the former Indian Penal Code, which prescribed punishment for cheating.

Ethanol blending in petrol refers to the practice of mixing ethanol, an alcohol-based fuel usually produced from crops such as sugarcane and maize, with conventional petrol before it is supplied to consumers. In India, the government has promoted this initiative to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, lower carbon emissions and support domestic farmers and the biofuel industry. E20 petrol is a fuel blend containing 20 per cent ethanol and 80 per cent conventional petrol.

Gandhi raised concerns over the possible consequences of higher ethanol content in petrol, saying it could hamper vehicle performance, lower fuel efficiency and push up maintenance expenses. He also questioned the absence of clear labels at fuel stations indicating the ethanol blend in the petrol being sold.
