Mumbai: Several retirement announcements in the sporting world this week have left fans heartbroken. And just as they were coming to terms with the news, another blow followed. India’s pace spearhead Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket.

Shami featured in 64 Test matches for India, claiming 229 wickets at an average of 27.71. His red-ball career also included six five-wicket hauls. The 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval marked his final outing in the longest format, with India suffering defeat in the title clash.

“Today, with a heavy heart and countless beautiful memories, I am taking the decision to retire from Test cricket,” Shami said in a social media post. “A thank you to every teammate, coach, family member, and crores of Indians who supported me throughout this journey and kept their faith in me during the good and tough times.”

Shami made his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, exactly 13 years before announcing his retirement from the format. He marked the occasion with an impressive match haul of nine wickets for 118 runs, the best figures of his Test career. While his ability to exploit reverse swing made him particularly effective on subcontinental pitches, Shami also proved his worth in overseas conditions, becoming an integral part of India’s pace attack. Notably, four of his six five-wicket hauls came in Australia and South Africa.
