On Thursday, US President Donald Trump stated that he had instructed the American military to “shoot and kill” small Iranian boats that he alleged were placing mines in the Strait of Hormuz, further intensifying tensions in one of the world’s most important shipping routes.
In a post on social media, Trump said he had directed the US Navy to take immediate action against any such small vessels, claiming Iran’s naval forces had already been destroyed. He emphasized that there should be no delay in responding. He also noted that US mine-clearing operations were currently underway in the Strait and should be significantly increased, describing a threefold expansion of the effort.
The Strait of Hormuz is a highly strategic maritime passage through which about 20% of global oil and natural gas shipments are transported.
