Om Prakash Mathur was sworn in as Keralam’s 29th Governor on Friday. Kerala High Court Chief Justice Soumen Sen administered the oath of office at a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan.

Mathur, who previously served as the Governor of Sikkim, was appointed to Keralam after  Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar was transferred to Tamil Nadu.

Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan, Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, members of the Cabinet and elected representatives attended the ceremony.

Mathur arrived in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday and was received at the airport by a delegation led by Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan.

Speaking about his new assignment, Mathur described Keralam as “God’s Own Country” and expressed his happiness at beginning a new chapter in the State.

The previous LDF government, led by Pinarayi Vijayan, frequently clashed with successive Governors, alleging attempts to saffronise universities in the State. The Left parties opposed the singing of the full version of Vande Mataram at official functions, arguing that it was inappropriate in a secular and pluralistic society.

After the Congress-led UDF government under V. D. Satheesan came to power, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar expressed displeasure over the national song Vande Mataram not being rendered in full before his policy address to the State Assembly.

It remains to be seen how the new Governor will approach his relationship with the Satheesan government. Unlike the previous LDF government, the new government has indicated that it does not intend to engage in a direct confrontation with the Governor. However, the government may be compelled to oppose the Governor if his actions give people in Keralam the impression that he is acting in accordance with the BJP’s political interests.
