Kochi: Four police officers have been suspended over alleged lapses in the investigation into the fatal Mercedes-Benz accident at Cheranalloor in Kochi, following public protests over the handling of the case.
The suspended personnel are Cheranalloor Circle Inspector K.S. Shyamkumar, Sub-Inspector Viswajith, Grade Sub-Inspector K.T. Manoj and Civil Police Officer Arun Joshi.
Jayabalakrishnan, who ran a roadside eatery near the South Chittoor temple, was killed early on Sunday when a Mercedes-Benz driven by a 17-year-old, the son of an Additional District Judge, hit his scooter from behind on Container Road.
The accident occurred in the early hours, but the FIR was registered only at 7.34 a.m. The teenager was not named in the FIR, although he and his father were at the police station at the time, according to reports.
The police initially booked the teenager for rash driving and causing death by negligence. He was later released on station bail without being produced before the Juvenile Justice Board. He reached home before the victim’s body was cremated.
The handling of the case sparked protests by the victim’s family and political organisations, with allegations of preferential treatment and lapses in the investigation.
