KATHMANDU: Nepal observed a traditional Hindu mourning day on Monday for the hundreds of people killed in the devastating flood near the country’s border with China. Search and rescue teams continued their operations after four people were found alive and rescued in recent days.
Government offices across Nepal and its diplomatic missions abroad lowered the national flag to half-mast. The Home Ministry said the observance marked the 13th day after the deaths. In Hindu tradition, the day is regarded as the final day of mourning. Families mark it through religious rituals and food offerings.
The disaster occurred on August 26 along the Himalayan border between Nepal and China’s Tibet region. A glacier broke away and triggered a massive flow of mud and rocks into a river. The resulting surge swept through towns and villages. It also covered roads and highways with large amounts of mud and debris.
At least 1,380 people have died in the disaster, while more than 5,500 remain missing.
Rescue teams have recovered four survivors in Nepal in recent days. A Chinese national was pulled from a tunnel on Saturday. Two hydropower workers were rescued from another tunnel on Friday. A Nepali woman was also found alive inside her buried house on Saturday.Search efforts are now focused on hydropower stations in the affected region. Authorities believe survivors could still be trapped there.
