India on Thursday described as inappropriate a social media post by Donald Trump in which he circulated remarks referring to the South Asian nation as a “hellhole.”
The controversial post on Truth Social came shortly before a scheduled visit to India next month by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is expected to work toward reducing recent strains between the traditionally close partners.
On Wednesday, Trump shared a four-page statement—apparently a transcript of comments made by conservative podcast host Michael Savage—criticising the US constitutional principle of birthright citizenship. The post, without providing evidence, also targeted Indian professionals in the tech sector, falsely claiming they avoid hiring white, US-born workers and alleging that Indian immigrants struggle with English proficiency. Trump additionally shared a video of Savage making similar claims on his podcast.
The post stated: “A baby here becomes an instant citizen, and then they bring the entire family in from China or India or some other hellhole on the planet.”
India’s foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded by calling the remarks “clearly uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste,” adding that they “do not reflect the reality of the India-US relationship, which has long been grounded in mutual respect and shared interests.”
Democratic Congressman Ami Bera, whose parents immigrated from India, condemned the post as “offensive, ignorant and beneath the dignity of the office he holds,” noting that Trump has not experienced the challenges faced by many immigrant families.
The Hindu American Foundation also criticised the message, calling it a “hateful, racist screed” and warning that such rhetoric could fuel discrimination and put communities at risk amid rising xenophobia.
Trump, who has prioritised strict immigration policies, has previously targeted visa categories commonly used by Indian technology workers. He has also maintained tariffs on India for months following tensions linked to comments by Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding Trump’s role in mediating an India-Pakistan conflict.
His increasingly critical tone toward India contrasts with long-standing US efforts under successive administrations to maintain strong ties with the world’s largest democracy, widely viewed in Washington as a strategic counterbalance to China.
