A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on Sunday, according to India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS), which monitors seismic activity and earthquakes. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
In an update posted on X, the agency said the tremor was recorded at 9.36 pm IST and originated at a depth of 147 km beneath the surface.
Afghanistan is prone to recurrent earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush region, which the Red Cross identifies as part of a highly seismically active zone. Afghanistan is highly susceptible to earthquakes because it lies along the zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide. Adding to this risk, a major fault line runs through several parts of the country, including the Herat region.
