Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has brought his international career to an end after 14 years, announcing his decision to retire from the national team and domestic cricket for Victoria.

The 38-year-old’s final appearance in Australian colours came against Oman in February during the ICC T20 World Cup. He had previously withdrawn from ODI cricket in 2025. His latest announcement also covers Victoria’s 50-over and four-day competitions.

Speaking on The Final Word podcast, Maxwell said Australia’s preparations for the 2028 Olympics and the need to introduce emerging players to international competition were among the considerations behind the changing team selection strategy. He also stressed the importance of managing his fitness to remain competitive in the remaining tournaments of his playing career.

Maxwell, widely recognised by his nickname ‘The Big Show’, represented Australia in 149 ODIs, 130 T20Is and seven Tests. He was part of three World Cup-winning campaigns, lifting the ODI trophy in 2015 and 2023 and the T20 title in 2021.

His international record includes 3,990 ODI runs at a strike rate of 126.7 and 2,897 T20I runs at 154.4. He also registered 10 centuries and claimed 136 wickets across all international formats.

Among his most memorable achievements was an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Despite struggling with severe cramps, he produced a match-winning innings to rescue Australia from a difficult position. Maxwell also disclosed that he had hoped to feature in a final international fixture at the Melbourne Cricket Ground but accepted the selectors’ decision to prioritise younger players.
