Kochi: Night-time power cuts in Kerala have triggered widespread complaints from residents, with many criticising the State government over its handling of the power crisis.
Several residents have taken to social media to express their concerns, particularly over the disruption caused by power cuts during the night. Parents of young children said the outages were disturbing their children’s sleep and urged the government to take immediate steps to address the issue.
Those returning home after a long day at work have also complained that the power cuts are making it difficult to rest, with homes becoming excessively warm. Some residents said keeping windows open for ventilation was not always feasible due to the risk of reptiles entering houses.
Residents have also criticised the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) for not providing information about the timing of the outages. They said power supply was being disrupted multiple times during the night without prior notice.
Although the government had earlier indicated that power restrictions would be imposed between 6 p.m. and midnight, residents said the authorities had not specified the exact timing of the outages.
In several places, residents gathered at KSEB offices to protest against what they described as the authorities’ failure to address the situation. Some residents also pointed out that they had not experienced similar power cuts during the previous two LDF governments led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
The UDF government, which came to power with expectations of improved governance, has faced criticism over its inability to prevent the power disruptions. Several organisations, including the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), have also held protests demanding that the government take steps to resolve the power crisis.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said the issue would be resolved soon. Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph said the public would be informed about the exact timing of the power cuts.
