Washington: US President Donald Trump has admitted that the war against Iran affected his Republican Party’s performance in the midterm elections. The Democrats won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
“Iran was part of it,” Trump told Fox News and The Wall Street Journal in separate interviews on Wednesday.
Despite the election setback and his earlier promise not to start new wars, Trump defended his decision to attack Iran. He said he had made the right decision and would do it again.
The war, which has entered its ninth month, has been unpopular among Americans. During the election campaign, Democratic candidates blamed the conflict for rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of other goods.
Trump has repeatedly changed his stated reasons and timelines for the war. At different times, he has threatened further military action while also claiming that he could end the conflict at any time.
In Tehran, Iranian leaders welcomed the US election results. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said on Wednesday that Americans had voted against war and that Iran supported their message.
