New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved a revised arrangement under which 75 per cent of Agniveers, who were earlier due to leave the Armed Forces after their initial four-year tenure, will be offered an opportunity to serve for another two years.

Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani announced the decision on Wednesday, saying the extended engagement would provide the personnel with another opportunity to pursue a career in the military.

At the end of the additional two-year period, Agniveers willing to remain in the forces will be considered for enrolment as regular personnel, subject to the prescribed objective selection criteria.

Under the original Agnipath recruitment framework, introduced on June 14, 2022, up to 25 per cent of each batch could be retained in the regular Armed Forces based on merit. The others were expected to complete their four-year tenure and return to civilian life.

The revised provision creates an additional stage of engagement for this latter group, taking their potential service period to six years before consideration for regular enrolment.

The decision comes as the first batch recruited under the Agnipath scheme approaches the end of its initial four-year term. General Subramani said the performance assessments carried out during this period had produced very positive feedback.
