Chennai: Seventeen inmates escaped from the Theni sub-jail in Tamil Nadu late on Monday night after attacking prison staff who entered their cell following a complaint that one of them was suffering an epileptic seizure. Four of the escapees had been arrested by Tuesday morning, while a search continued for the others. Nine prison personnel, including two head constables, were suspended in connection with the incident.

Tamil Nadu Law Minister Nirmal Kumar said one of the inmates had pretended to be unwell to draw the guards into the cell. The prisoners then attacked the warden and two other personnel who came to check on the inmate, the minister said. The incident left three prison staff members injured.

Police launched an extensive search operation, establishing checkpoints at 16 locations in neighbouring Dindigul district and deploying 17 special teams to trace the remaining escapees. Authorities in Dindigul, Madurai and Idukki were alerted, and photographs of the escapees were circulated among police officials to help identify and apprehend them.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay came under fire from opposition parties DMK and BJP on Tuesday over the jailbreak incident. DMK president and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin criticised the government. He questioned the administration’s ability to maintain prison security, arguing that it had failed to prevent inmates from fleeing custody.

DMK MP Kanimozhi also attacked the government, raising concerns about its ability to ensure security both inside prisons and beyond their walls.
