KPCC general secretary Aryadan Shoukath is likely to be the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate for the upcoming Nilambur byelection.
Sources within the Congress party said that the party high command has asked him to begin preparations for the election in the constituency. Following the directive, Shoukath has been more actively participating in various programmes both within and outside the constituency in recent months.
Shoukath was prominently positioned next to Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi during some of her recent public events in the Wayanad parliamentary constituency – suggesting that he is a strong contender for the ticket.
Shoukath has also begun efforts to secure the support of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). In a recent interview, he was seen appreciating the IUML’s charitable activities.
However, the UDF will announce its official candidate only after the Election Commission releases the election schedule. Whether the circumstances will shift against Shoukath once the election schedule is announced remains to be seen.
Malappuram District Congress Committee (DCC) president V S Joy is considered the UDF’s second choice for the seat. However, party leaders fear that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) may try to bring Shoukath into its fold if the Congress nominates Joy as its candidate.
The Congress leadership is also mindful of the potential fallout if Shoukath turns against the party in the constituency. Shoukath’s popularity in the constituency, along with the support of former Nilambur MLA P V Anvar, is expected to work in his favour.
Congress leader A P Anil Kumar has been tasked with preparing the party for the byelection. He has already begun his organisational work in the constituency. The CPI(M) has entrusted its state secretariat member M Swaraj with overseeing the party’s election preparations in Nilambur.
