Auckland: Virat Kohli struck a fluent 74 as India defeated New Zealand by five wickets under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method in the rain-affected first ODI at Eden Park on Wednesday.

Chasing a revised target of 143 in 32 overs, India reached 143 for five in 22.4 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Kohli’s 51-ball knock, which included his 80th half-century in ODIs, laid the foundation for the victory.

Kohli and captain Shubman Gill added 114 runs for the second wicket after Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a duck early in the chase. Gill contributed 37 off 56 balls before departing in the 19th over. Kohli was dismissed for 74, but India remained firmly in control of the chase. Naman Dhir hit the winning boundary.

Earlier, India’s pace attack restricted New Zealand to 185 in 40.2 overs after the hosts were put in to bat. Arshdeep Singh led the attack with four wickets for 70 runs, while Gurnoor Brar claimed three for 44. Anshul Kamboj picked up two wickets for 22 runs in his 10 overs.

Tim Seifert top-scored for New Zealand with 38, while Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips made 28 and 30 respectively. Blair Tickner added a late 34 off 23 balls, but the hosts were unable to build a substantial total.

Kohli also made an impact in the field, taking a spectacular diving catch to dismiss Nathan Smith off Kamboj’s bowling. Kamboj was named Player of the Match for his economical spell and two wickets. The second ODI will be played in Wellington on Saturday.
