Delhi: A sharp political clash marked the opening day of Parliament’s special session on Thursday, as Union ministers Arjun Ram Meghwal and Amit Shah tabled three bills in the Lok Sabha. The proposals seek changes to the women’s reservation law and the creation of a delimitation commission, drawing strong objections from opposition parties, which described them as “anti-constitutional.”
Speaker Om Birla approved a 15–18 hour discussion on the bills, with voting planned for 4 pm on Friday.
Backing the measures, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said the quota would not disadvantage any state. In contrast, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi alleged that the government was trying to push through delimitation indirectly by using the Women’s Reservation Act.
The draft constitutional amendment also proposes raising the strength of the Lok Sabha from 543 to up to 850 seats. This increase is intended to enable the rollout of women’s reservation before the 2029 general elections, after a fresh delimitation exercise based on the 2011 Census.
