Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi has sparked controversy by urging students to chant “Jai Shri Ram” during his address at an engineering college event in Madurai. A video of the Governor making this request, which he framed as a tribute to the ancient poet who authored the Kamba Ramayanam, quickly went viral.
Governor Ravi’s remarks attracted strong criticism from the ruling DMK, which accused him of acting as a spokesperson for the RSS.
DMK spokesperson Dharanidharan reportedly criticized the Governor for resembling an RSS representative, questioning why he consistently disregards the Constitution and stating that his actions undermine the country’s secular values.
Congress MLA Aassan Maulana also condemned Governor Ravi for his “Jai Shri Ram” comment, accusing him of speaking in a manner that promotes a particular religious ideology.
In addition, the Governor recently made headlines for blocking bills passed by the Tamil Nadu government. On April 11, 2025, the Supreme Court delivered a landmark ruling, stating that Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi’s decision to block bills passed by the DMK government was both “erroneous and illegal.” More importantly, the Court emphasized that a governor cannot indefinitely reject or delay the decisions of a legislature that holds a democratic mandate and is answerable to the public.
