Uttarakhand: In a significant move, Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, proposed the enactment of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill on Tuesday. The state Assembly swiftly passed the bill on Wednesday. This development marks Uttarakhand as the pioneer state in implementing a Uniform Civil Code, covering various legal aspects such as inheritance, marriage, and divorce. The formulation of the UCC Bill was based on a draft submitted by a high-level committee chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana P Desai.
This development in Uttarakhand comes at a crucial time, just months ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Reports indicate that the Union Government is contemplating a similar law at the national level, with BJP-ruled states like Assam and Gujarat already making strides in passing their versions of the UCC.
Clarifications from the Uttarakhand government specify that members of the Scheduled Tribes (ST) community are exempt from the Uniform Civil Code. This exemption, in line with constitutional provisions, safeguards the customary rights of these communities.
