Kochi: Malayalam actor Anupama Parameswaran has spoken publicly about a relationship that she says left her emotionally and physically hurt.
Speaking to Dhanya Varma, Anupama said she experienced what she described as narcissistic abuse during the relationship. She said people close to her could see that she was changing and becoming more distant.
According to Anupama, the relationship developed very quickly. She said her former partner introduced her to his family after their first or second date. She said the two also started discussing marriage within three months.
Anupama said she did not accept the engagement proposal and asked for more time. She also responded to allegations that she was interested in the relationship because of money. Rejecting the “gold digger” tag, she said she was the one who decided against moving forward with the engagement.
She said the relationship also affected her career. Anupama pointed to Dragon, which she described as the biggest success of her career, and said she did not take part in its promotions. She also said she had rejected several film offers during the relationship.
Anupama alleged that her former partner’s influence went beyond her personal life and extended to her professional decisions. She said controlling behaviour may not be obvious at the beginning of a relationship and can increase over time.
She also described a repeated change in her former partner’s behaviour. At times, she said, he would be loving and caring, but this would be followed by behaviour that hurt her. She said he would then apologise and promise to change.
Comparing this change in behaviour to the different personalities shown by Vikram in the Tamil film Anniyan, Anupama said the experience was difficult for her to understand at the time. She said her family, friends and staff were aware that something was wrong. Her comments also shed light on an earlier social media post that had led to speculation about her personal life.
