The death toll from the flash floods that devastated parts of Nepal has climbed to 1,127, with 4,858 people still unaccounted for, Nepal Police said on Wednesday, the eighth day of the disaster.
Rescue teams continued their efforts to find survivors and retrieve bodies from areas affected by the Himalayan disaster.
According to police data, the highest number of recovered bodies was recorded in Chitwan with 348, followed by Nawalparasi East with 217, Nawalparasi West with 190 and Nuwakot with 155. Gorkha reported 66 recovered bodies, while 59 were recovered in Dhading, 45 in Rasuwa and 38 in Tanahu.
Authorities said postmortem examinations and legal identification procedures had been completed for 1,113 victims. Of these, 95 bodies have been released to their families.
To assist relatives searching for missing family members, Nepal Police has published information on 911 unidentified bodies on its official website.
Security personnel have so far rescued 6,541 people from the flood-affected regions. Search efforts remain underway to trace the 4,858 people reported missing.
A total of 7,912 police personnel have been deployed across the affected areas. Their duties include rescue operations, distributing relief supplies, handling recovered bodies and supporting other emergency measures.
Police teams are also relocating residents from vulnerable areas, removing debris from blocked roads and working with local administrations and residents on rescue and relief operations. The disaster struck on August 26, after an avalanche or collapse involving ice and rock near the Nepal-Tibet border triggered flash floods that swept through towns and villages across northern and central Nepal.
