The revised version of Empuraan will be released in theaters either on Monday evening or Tuesday morning. The Censor Board ordered the removal of certain scenes and references following controversies over the film’s content.
Earlier reports indicated that the edited version would be ready by Thursday. However, due to the Censor Board’s strict deadline, the re-editing process had to be rushed.
Although Sunday and Monday were holidays, Censor Board members held a special meeting until late Sunday night to review the film and finalize the necessary changes.
Initially, the Censor Board demanded the removal of about twenty minutes from the film’s first half. After discussions, they agreed to cut approximately three minutes instead.
The filmmakers will also comply with the directive to change the villain’s name from “Bajrangi.” Reports suggest that either the name will be altered or all references to it will be muted.
Additionally, scenes depicting riots and sexual assault will be removed.
Murali Gopy, the film’s writer, has yet to respond to the controversy. Film industry organizations have also remained silent on the matter.
Currently, Empuraan is being screened in 4,000 theaters across four languages. Despite the controversies, the film continues to draw packed audiences.
The protests by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) forced the filmmakers to comply with the suggested edits. Organiser, the RSS mouthpiece, sharply criticized the film for allegedly misrepresenting the 2002 Gujarat riots. However, a large section of the public believes that the filmmakers’ freedom of expression should be protected.
Earlier, the same organizations now criticizing Empuraan had supported The Kerala Story, directed by Sudipto Sen. The film falsely claimed that 32,000 Hindu and Christian girls from Kerala had gone missing and were recruited into the Islamic State after being converted to Islam. However, while Empuraan did not make any direct references to political organizations, it was still required to be re-released with an edited version. Many believe that forcing the filmmakers to alter the film is unfair. Additionally, some people in Kerala withdrew their support for the movie after Mohanlal apologized for including controversial scenes and agreed to make cuts.
Meanwhile, BJP leader B. Gopalakrishnan insulted Empuraan director Prithviraj’s wife, Supriya Menon, calling her an “urban Naxal.” He also urged Prithviraj’s mother, veteran actress Mallika Sukumaran, to “control” her daughter-in-law. A social media post by Supriya had provoked BJP leaders, leading to Gopalakrishnan’s remarks.
“You are not Illuminati; you are my proud, self-confident, and determined husband. Many people have mocked your dreams. To all of them, I have only one thing to say: Know whom you’re messing with, ” Supriya said.
