New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a status report detailing the progress of its investigation into allegations that donations made to the Ram temple in Ayodhya had been embezzled.

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust was also served notice by a Bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohan on petitions calling for an independent, time-bound probe into the alleged theft of donations.

Among the three petitioners, Narendra Kumar Goswami urged the Supreme Court to hand over the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He also requested that the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) conduct an audit of the accounts of the Trust, the body responsible for administering the Ram temple.

Advocates Ajay Kumar Rai and Dinesh Kumar Yadav also approached the apex court with a separate petition seeking similar directions. In another plea, RJD MP Sudhakar Singh sought a CBI inquiry under the supervision of the Supreme Court and a forensic examination of the temple Trust’s finances.

The Uttar Pradesh government set up the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on June 13 following a request from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust after allegations surfaced regarding the misappropriation of donations received by the Ram temple. The panel comprises Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, Inspector General of Police Kiran S., and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan.
