New Delhi: The implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) by the Center has proceeded despite intense criticism and ongoing court proceedings. The Ministry of Home Affairs has unveiled a new mobile application dedicated to facilitating the implementation of the CAA. Named “CAA 2019,” this app is now available for download on the Play Store. Additionally, the Center has announced that individuals can utilize this app to apply for citizenship.

The CAA extends citizenship privileges to individuals belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian communities who migrated to India from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh before 2014. The Bill introducing these provisions was initially presented in the Lok Sabha in July 2016 and was later passed by the Lok Sabha on January 8, 2019.

The Supreme Court currently faces numerous petitions challenging the legality of the CAA. In a recent development, the court announced its intention to review 257 petitions on Tuesday. Chief Justice has emphasized the importance of conducting detailed hearings on these cases.

Despite the legal challenges, the central government has maintained its stance on the CAA’s implementation. Home Minister Amit Shah has explicitly stated that there are no plans to withdraw the CAA, reiterating the government’s position during court proceedings where it was clarified that petitioners do not hold the right to challenge the citizenship implementation process.
