Lucknow: On Tuesday, the Samajwadi Party (SP) announced the termination of seat-sharing discussions with the Congress. Just the day before, the Samajwadi Party had pledged 17 Lok Sabha seats to the Congress, with the option for the Congress to either accept or reject the offer.
The offer was extended to the Congress on Monday during Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Amethi. However, according to SP leaders, the Congress has yet to respond, which they interpret as a sign of rejection.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress opted to contest independently in Uttar Pradesh without forming alliances. Despite vying for a significant portion of the state’s 80 parliamentary seats, the Congress only secured one seat. This solitary victory was in Raebareli, held by Sonia Gandhi, marking a decrease from their previous tally of two seats.
Rahul Gandhi, a prominent Congress leader, suffered a significant defeat in Amethi, a traditional stronghold for his family, losing to Smriti Irani of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Samajwadi Party expressed doubt about the Congress’s electoral prospects in the upcoming elections, arguing that there was little hope for an improvement in their performance. Speculations even suggested that the Congress’s electoral fortunes in Uttar Pradesh could deteriorate further.
