New Delhi: In order to boost the unity among Opposition parties before the upcoming general elections, leaders from different political groups participated in a protest organized by the Kerala government at Jantar Mantar on Thursday.
The protest was against what the state government claimed to be attacks on federalism by the Central government, particularly focusing on issues related to the allocation of resources.
The meeting evolved into a congregation of states in opposition, with the presence of three Chief Ministers, Members of Parliament (MPs), Ministers, and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), all convening to advocate for justice concerning their individual states.
In addition to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who spearheaded the protest, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also engaged in the demonstration.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah organized a similar protest on Wednesday.
In his opening speech, Pinarayi Vijayan said that if federalism is undermined, it will lead to losses for all states.
Kejriwal expressed that the situation has reached a point where states have to come to Jantar Mantar to protest and demand their rights.
He emphasized that Pinarayi Vijayan’s presence wasn’t about seeking personal benefits but rather about securing Kerala’s rightful allocations.
He pointed out the arrests of opposition leaders as a tactic to suppress dissent by the BJP.
“Apart from withholding resources, the central government was employing Governors and Lieutenant Governors to obstruct the functioning of governments led by opposition parties,” Kejriwal said.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann mentioned that the central government had also refused to allocate Punjab’s share of revenues. He criticized the BJP for focusing on communal issues instead of addressing the nation’s needs and asserted that Punjab didn’t require any lectures on patriotism from the Sangh Parivar.
Additionally, he accused the Punjab Governor of obstructing the Assembly session and attempting to deprive the state of its democratic rights.
