Kochi: Veteran actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma passed away on Friday while undergoing treatment for age-related illnesses at a private hospital here. She was 78 years old. Ponnamma appeared in over 700 films, gaining widespread recognition for her portrayal of motherly roles.
In recent years, Ponnamma had stepped back from acting and was leading a restful life at her residence in North Paravur. Throughout her career, she received the State Film Award for Best Supporting Actress four times, in 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1994. Born on September 10, 1945, in the village of Kaviyoor in Pathanamthitta district, she made a significant impact on the Malayalam film industry.
Her cinematic journey began in 1962 with her debut in the film ‘Sreerama Pattabhishekam.’ In 1965, she portrayed the mother of actors Sathyan and Madhu in ‘Thommante Makkal.’ That same year, she also played the lead female character in ‘Odayil Ninnu.’
