New Delhi: The deadline set by the Supreme Court for SBI on the Electoral Bond issue ends today. The Supreme Court has directed that all information related to the electoral bond should be handed over to the Election Commission for publication. The court has also instructed SBI to comply with this directive and provide accurate information.
The Election Commission’s proposal is to disclose the alphanumeric numbers to identify which party has received the bonds. The SBI Chairman and Managing Director must submit an affidavit to the Supreme Court after publishing the details before 5 pm on Thursday. The court has also directed the Election Commission to upload the information received from SBI on the Election Commission’s website. During the previous hearing, the Supreme Court criticized SBI for incomplete information.
“The judgment is clear that all details must be disclosed, not selectively. You must disclose all information in your possession relating to electoral bonds. We assume you are not advocating for a political party. SBI is bound to obey the judgment of this court,” Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said during the last hearing of this case.
The Supreme Court had earlier issued a notice to SBI stating that the information provided regarding electoral bonds was incomplete. SBI maintains the position that it can provide certain information only upon the court’s request. The court had also said that if the court demanded the handover of all information, then it would suffice to provide all the information.
Recent documents have revealed that SBI paid money for expired electoral bonds as per the instructions of the central government. The law stipulates that electoral bonds must be used within 15 days. SBI disbursed some overdue bonds according to the Finance Ministry’s guidelines
