Kerala: The farmers’ organizations in Wayanad district have called for a hartal on Tuesday, citing concerns about inadequate government measures to ensure residents’ safety amidst wildlife attacks. This decision emerged from a meeting led by farmers’ organizations.
For the past four years, farmers’ organizations in Wayanad have been actively engaging in strikes and protests, yet they allege that the government has consistently neglected their grievances. Representatives of these organizations said that only after residents confronted district administration officials, a higher compensation of ten lakh rupees was announced for the family of Panachiyil Ajeesh, who tragically lost his life in a wild elephant attack in Mananthavady, Wayanad, on Saturday morning.
The hartal is scheduled to take place from 6 am to 6 pm on Tuesday. The farmers’ organizations stress that their aim is not to forcibly close shops or obstruct vehicular traffic. However, they urge those mourning the loss of Ajeesh to extend their support and cooperation during the hartal.
Ajeesh, aged 47 and a resident of Padamala, was fatally attacked by an elephant that breached the residential area by breaking through the gate and wall of his house. Notably, the elephant had previously been captured by the Karnataka Forest Department and released into the forest after being equipped with a radio collar. Last week, the elephant entered the forests of Kerala, culminating in the tragic incident.
