Jharkhand: Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Champai Soren assumed the position of Chief Minister of Jharkhand on February 2, taking the oath at the Raj Bhavan in Ranchi. This development transpired two days after Hemant Soren’s resignation as the CM and subsequent arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) .
Champai Soren has been granted a 10-day window to demonstrate his government’s majority.
The 67-year-old is now the 12th chief minister of Jharkhand , marking the sixth from Jharkhand’s Kolhan region.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Alamgir Alam, a senior leader from the Congress party, and Satyanand Bhokta, a leader from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), took the oath of office and assumed the roles of cabinet ministers.
Champai Soren, the oldest child of Simal Soren, who is a farmer from Jilinggoda village in Saraikela-Kharsawan district, completed his education up to Class X at a government school. In the late ’90s, Champai Soren played an active role in the Jharkhand movement alongside Shibu Soren, and due to his notable contributions, he earned the recognition ‘Jharkhand Tiger.’ His political journey commenced with his victory as an independent MLA in a by-election for the Saraikela seat in 1991.
Meanwhile, Hemant Soren was placed in the custody of the ED for a duration of five days by a special PMLA court in Ranchi. This custody is related to a money laundering case associated with an alleged land fraud.
Soren was apprehended on Wednesday night following an extensive seven-hour interrogation conducted by the ED concerning the money laundering case.
