UN chief Antonio Guterres emphasized on Tuesday that no party involved in an armed conflict can evade accountability under international humanitarian law. He expressed deep concern regarding the relentless bombardment of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip by Israeli forces and urged all parties to step back from further escalation of violence.

The Security Council’s ministerial meeting, presided over by the Brazilian President of the Council, saw the participation of notable figures including US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Israel’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Eli Cohen, Palestine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Riyad Al-Maliki, Brazil’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira, and France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna.

Guterres underscored the serious breaches of international humanitarian law observed in Gaza, stating unequivocally, “No party engaged in an armed conflict is exempt from international humanitarian law.”

According to reports, Israel’s UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan characterized Guterres’ address as “shocking.” In a post on X, Erdan called for Guterres’ immediate resignation. Additionally, Cohen stated that he would no longer hold a scheduled meeting with Guterres later on Tuesday.
