Kozhikode: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has clarified that it will not stake a claim for a fifth ministerial berth if the Congress-led UDF government comes to power after the Assembly elections.
This statement comes amid ongoing campaign narratives suggesting that IUML would demand additional ministerial positions, including a deputy ministership.
IUML National General Secretary P. K. Kunhalikutty said in an interview that no one in the party would press for a fifth ministership.
Following the 2011 Kerala Assembly elections, IUML emerged as the second-largest ally in the UDF with around 20 MLAs. At that time, it was initially allotted four ministerial positions.
However, the party later demanded a fifth berth, arguing that its legislative strength justified greater representation.
Referring to that episode, Kunhalikutty explained that the demand for a fifth minister was made in 2011 in response to public sentiment, particularly after the party gave up the Deputy Speaker position.
However, it remains to be seen whether IUML will stick to this position after the election.
