DEHRADUN: Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, on Tuesday introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in the state assembly. This 192-page bill covers various aspects like marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships.
One key feature is strict penalties for not registering live-in relationships. Failure to do so could result in a maximum of six months’ imprisonment, a penalty of Rs 25,000, or a combination of both.
Children born to parents who are not married but are in a live-in relationship will be considered legally legitimate. They will have the same rights as children born within a marriage. Additionally, the bill states that if one partner in a live-in relationship is under 21, their parents must be informed. Moreover, the end of the relationship must be reported.
Women who are left by their partners in a live-in relationship can ask for financial support. During the bill’s presentation, CM Dhami highlighted how important it was and asked for a detailed discussion to encourage fairness in society.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress criticized the rushed approval process, questioning the government’s motives. Leader of the opposition Yashpal Arya expressed frustration, stating that the government’s urgency seemed suspicious and hinted at potential hidden agendas.
