Following the recent announcement by Australia’s Western Sydney University about its intention to establish an independent campus in Bangalore, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued regulations. These regulations enable foreign universities ranked within the top 500 globally to establish branch campuses in India. These universities will have the authority to determine their own admission processes, fee structures, and have the option to repatriate funds to their parent institutions.
In cases where two or more universities decide to collaborate on establishing campuses in India, each institution must meet the eligibility criteria individually. Furthermore, a single foreign university can establish multiple campuses in India, but a separate application must be submitted to the commission for each proposed campus.
These guidelines were released nearly 10 months after the draft was made public for feedback. Based on the received inputs, the final regulations have been refined. One notable revision stipulates that foreign universities must ensure that international faculty members appointed to teach at the Indian campuses stay here for at least one semester.
