Geneva: Hamas has expressed gratitude to China and Russia for thwarting the resolution brought by the United States to the UN Security Council to justify Israel’s actions. In a statement, Hamas clarified that this resolution does not specifically call for an immediate ceasefire. Russia and China vetoed the resolution in the Security Council.
The US criticized Russia and China’s actions. For the fifth consecutive day, numerous casualties occurred in Israeli attacks on al-Shifa hospital. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken demanded that Israel cease its actions in Rafah. Meanwhile, the death toll in Gaza has exceeded 32,000.
The United States stated that it is unfortunate that Russia and China vetoed the resolution brought to the United Nations Security Council demanding an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza. The White House responded, expressing regret that the resolution aimed at providing aid and releasing hostages in Gaza failed.
However, Hamas pointed out in a statement that the resolution, which justified Israel and did not take a definitive stance for an immediate ceasefire, needed to be defeated. In the statement, Hamas also made it clear that the world recognizes the United States’ vested interests in supporting Israel by providing substantial quantities of weapons, enabling the genocide of the Palestinian people.
In the 15-member committee, 11 countries voted in favor of the resolution, and three countries voted against it. Guyana abstained from voting. Besides permanent members China and Russia, Algeria also voted against. Russia and China accused the US of presenting a bogus resolution to give Israel the green light for military action in Rafah. The United States has vetoed resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza brought to the UN Security Council multiple times.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that a major disaster awaits if the emergency ceasefire is delayed. France announced that it would attempt to bring a new resolution before the Security Council as soon as possible.
