New Delhi: On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao, the 9th Prime Minister of India, and Chaudhary Charan Singh, the 5th Prime Minister of India, along with agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan, will be conferred with the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honor in India.

This year, the number of recipients for the Bharat Ratna has risen to five, surpassing the record set in 1999 when four individuals were honored. This marks the highest number of Bharat Ratna awards presented in a single year.

Prime Minister Modi praised three people for their important contributions to India. He praised Rao for changing the economy with his liberalization policies, Singh for fighting for farmers’ rights, and Swaminathan for his significant achievements in agriculture recognized worldwide. Modi thanked them for their great service to the country.

Among the people who will be honored, four of them have already passed away. The only person who is still alive and will be honored is Advani, who is 96 years old. Karpoori Thakur, former chief minister of Bihar, will be posthumously awarded India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna.
