Nepal has announced its intention to prohibit TikTok, asserting that the popular video-sharing app is causing disruptions to social harmony and goodwill due to its “misuse.” The decision was disclosed by Nepal’s Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, following a cabinet meeting on Monday.
Sharma explained that TikTok has consistently been used to disseminate content that disrupts social harmony, family structures, and social relations, prompting the government’s decision to take action. The Minister mentioned that efforts are underway to technically shut down TikTok, though the specific reasons for the ban were not explicitly detailed.
This move follows the trend of other countries that have either partially or completely banned TikTok, often citing security concerns. Nepal’s decision is also influenced by over 1,600 registered TikTok-related cybercrime cases within the country over the past four years, as reported by local media.
