NEW DELHI: The Union government informed the Supreme Court on Monday that its ability to intervene in the case of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, who faces execution in Yemen, is severely limited due to the country’s complex diplomatic status. Attorney General R Venkataramani told the Court that the Indian government can’t do much to help because Yemen is a very sensitive country politically, and India does not have official diplomatic ties with it. This makes it very difficult for the government to step in or take formal action.
Venkataramani also said that India had exhausted its options and was avoiding public intervention to prevent further complications. “Efforts are ongoing through private channels,” he added. The remarks came in response to a petition filed by the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council (SNPIAC), which urged the court to direct the Centre to use diplomatic measures to halt the execution.
