In Tamil Nadu’s coastal areas, significant rainfall and strong winds have persisted since Monday morning. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has forecasted that the adverse weather conditions, characterized by heavy rain and strong winds, will endure across Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu districts until Monday night.

Across eight locations in Tamil Nadu, a total of 236 relief camps have been established to provide sustenance, water, and essential provisions to 9,634 individuals. Chief Minister MK Stalin has communicated that relief operations in affected areas involve 725 personnel from the police, fire, rescue, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Residents of Chennai are currently facing extreme distress, compounded by communication challenges. The government is actively taking measures to provide food items to the affected population.

This critical situation demands maximum support for the people in Chennai. The full extent of the damages will only become apparent in the coming days. Even if the rains subside, it will take several days to restore normalcy to the region.

Chennai residents experienced a similar situation in 2015 during widespread floods that affected both Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, resulting in a significant loss of life. The recovery from those floods took almost a year.

While it may not be the time for criticism, it’s essential to acknowledge certain facts. India frequently faces floods, landslides, and other natural disasters, resulting in the loss of lives every year. Governments have yet to take the matter seriously, failing to conduct sufficient research on climate change and natural disasters for prevention. It is now imperative to conduct research on climate change, engage in preventative measures, and protect the environment.
