The healthcare system in Gaza is facing a severe crisis, on the brink of collapse, as strongly criticized by the medical community. The condemnation is directed towards the Israeli military for their attacks on hospitals, patients, and healthcare workers in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
The three-pronged attack by Israel, involving airstrikes, a siege, and a ground invasion in Gaza (home to 2.3 million people), targeted religious sites, schools, relief camps, and notably hospitals and medical personnel—categories protected under International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
Despite global leaders and organizations expressing disapproval, with widespread protests, Israel maintains its stance that Hamas is concealing weapons in tunnels beneath hospitals—an allegation denied by Hamas.
The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, reported over 250 verified attacks on healthcare in Gaza and the West Bank since October 7. There have been 25 attacks on healthcare in Israel. This information was shared during Dr. Ghebreyesus’s address at the Emergency meeting of the UN Security Council recently.
