A senior government official has said that India will not offer incentives tailored for specific companies or enterprises within the electric vehicle sector. This announcement comes in response to the lobbying efforts by Tesla, the American electric car manufacturer, seeking special incentives for establishing its factory in the country.
The official clarified that if the government contemplates providing incentives, it will be for all electric vehicle manufacturers interested in entering the Indian market, rather than catering to individual companies.
Regarding discussions on Tesla’s request for customs duty concessions, the official mentioned that inter-ministerial deliberations have taken place, but no definitive conclusions have been reached on this matter. In 2021, Tesla, based in the United States, advocated for a reduction in import duties on EVs in India.
