The HPCL (Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd) Chhara LNG (liquefied natural gas) import terminal in Gujarat is anticipated to commence operations in the coming months. According to Amit Garg, the Marketing Director of the public sector firm, discussions are underway with six to seven companies expressing interest in securing capacity at the facility.
Situated in the Gir-Somnath district, the Chhara terminal is poised to have a capacity of importing and regasifying 5 mtpa (million tonnes per annum) of LNG, marking HPCL’s entry into the natural gas sector. This move aligns with the existing involvement of the other two public sector fuel retailers, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), who are already active participants in the LNG business.
Both IOCL and BPCL are among the four promoters of the country’s largest liquefied natural gas importer, Petronet LNG, with IOCL additionally operating its own liquefied natural gas terminal at Ennore in Tamil Nadu.
