A prominent Israeli-Canadian advocate for peace, Vivian Silver, who was initially feared to be a hostage in Gaza, has been officially confirmed as deceased. The 74-year-old resided near Israel’s Gaza border in kibbutz Be’eri, which came under attack by Hamas during the events on October 7.

Although remains were discovered at her residence earlier, it took five weeks for them to be formally identified as hers. Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly expressed condolences, referring to Ms. Silver as a “lifelong advocate for peace.”

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Silver was widely recognized in Israel for her efforts in promoting peace with the Palestinians through the Women Wage Peace movement. This movement aimed to exert pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to negotiate a peace agreement, ultimately resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict.
