To address the issue of deepfakes, a meeting between the government and top social media platforms took place on Tuesday. During the meeting, the platforms were informed that there are legal consequences for user harms, even under existing laws.
On November 24, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of State for IT, held discussions with representatives of social media firms. These companies were instructed to take prompt action against deepfakes within seven days. Additionally, they were urged to align their terms of use with the IT rules. Some social media platforms have already complied, while those progressing slowly have been granted extra time.
In the meeting on Tuesday, the government emphasized its commitment to a “zero tolerance approach” regarding user harm.
