The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, presented the 69th National Film Awards across various categories in New Delhi on Tuesday. During the ceremony, she also bestowed the Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award for the year 2021 upon Waheeda Rehman.
In her address, the President extended her congratulations to Waheeda Rehman, acknowledging her exceptional talent and persona that have elevated her to the zenith of the film industry. She commended Waheeda Rehman for choosing roles that shattered societal norms associated with women, setting an inspiring example for women’s empowerment.
The President highlighted the noteworthy performances of Pallavi Joshi, Alia Bhatt, and Kriti Sanon, who were recognized for their portrayals of empowered female characters. She also commended director Srishti Lakhera for depicting the indomitable spirit of an 80-year-old woman in the award-winning film titled ‘Ek Tha Gaon’. The President emphasized that sensitive and artistic portrayals of female characters contribute to increased awareness, understanding, and respect for women in society.
She expressed her satisfaction with the selection of films this year, which addressed critical issues such as climate change, human trafficking, gender oppression, corruption, and social exploitation. The President recognized the diverse range of subjects covered, including the tribal communities’ reverence for nature and art, the embodiment of Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals, and the display of unwavering determination in the face of adversity.
The President emphasized that films transcend mere entertainment and business; they are powerful tools for spreading awareness and empathy. Meaningful films serve as mirrors reflecting both the triumphs and challenges of society and the nation.
Furthermore, the President asserted that the film industry offers a vivid portrayal of the multifaceted reality of Indian society. Cinema serves as both a record of our society and a means to enhance it. She praised cinema artists as catalysts for change, as they offer insights about the country and connect its citizens.
The President emphasized the need for Indian films to embrace the country’s social diversity and rich cultural heritage. Such films, she believed, would not only benefit the nation and society but also find commercial success. She encouraged the film fraternity to undertake this endeavor with steadfast determination.
Finally, the President expressed her appreciation for all individuals associated with the award-winning films of the 69th National Film Awards. She expressed confidence in the film fraternity’s ability to continually establish new standards of global excellence, with Indian films playing a pivotal role in building a developed India.
