Ernakulam District Congress Committee (DCC) President Mohammed Shiyas, on November 22, 2023, employed inappropriate language against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. While inaugurating the protest march organized by the KSU in Ernakulam, Shiyas remarked, “If you are afraid of a black flag, you should resign from your position. Pinarayi Vijayan… Bastard, should resign,” Shiyas said.
The protest march was arranged in response to the attack on Youth Congress members by a DYFI member in Kannur on November 21, 2023. The Youth Congress activists suffered injuries while attempting to wave a black flag at the Chief Minister on the day.
Following the incident in Kannur, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan justified the DYFI members’ actions, characterizing it as a life-saving intervention to prevent an accident involving the Youth Congress members and the bus.
The justification further fueled resentment among Congress members in the state.
The Youth Congress has initiated black flag protests against the Chief Minister and other ministers during their statewide tour as part of the Navakerala Sadas, since it started from Kasaragod from November 18, 2023.
While expressing dissent is crucial, public figures must exercise caution in their choice of language, refraining from the use of offensive remarks as witnessed in Shiyas’s statement.
