Kannur: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) has expelled senior Kannur leader T.K. Govindan following his public dissent over the party’s candidate selection in the Taliparamba Assembly constituency.

The decision was taken by the CPM Kannur district committee and subsequently ratified by the State leadership. Confirming the development, district secretary K.K. Ragesh said the action was necessitated by Mr. Govindan’s deviation from party discipline and decisions.

The dispute arose after Mr. Govindan opposed the party’s decision to field P.K. Shyamala, wife of State secretary M.V. Govindan, in Taliparamba. He alleged that the selection amounted to nepotism and did not have the backing of a section of local leaders. His criticism soon escalated into open dissent against the leadership.

Responding to the allegations, Mr. Ragesh said that candidate selection was based on organisational considerations and denied any favouritism. He also accused Mr. Govindan of making baseless claims and acting out of personal motives. Despite being entrusted with key responsibilities within the party, Mr. Govindan had chosen to act against its interests, he added.
