New Delhi: The Congress party on Tuesday asked the central government to explain the sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down on Monday night citing health issues.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the resignation might be due to reasons more serious than just health. Gaurav Gogoi, the party’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, also asked whether the government was informed in advance and if it had made arrangements for a smooth replacement.

“The Vice President’s resignation is unexpected and shocking. I wish Dhankhar ji good health,” Gogoi wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

He said the government should clarify whether it had prior information about the resignation and questioned the absence of senior ministers from a key meeting chaired by the Vice President on Monday.

Ramesh said Dhankhar’s decision to resign showed his integrity but raised doubts about those who helped him get the post.

He also asked why Union ministers JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju skipped the second Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting held at 4.30 pm on Monday. According to Ramesh, Dhankhar had chaired an earlier BAC meeting at 12.30 pm the same day, which both Nadda and Rijiju attended. The committee had decided to meet again in the afternoon, but the two ministers were absent, raising further questions.
