Adelaide: Australia and Britain have called for an end to the conflict in Gaza. Both nations have cautioned that if Israel proceeds with an attack on Rafah, there will be catastrophic consequences. The two countries have also issued a joint statement urging for a ceasefire by Friday.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Defense Minister Richard Marles chaired the discussion. British Foreign Ministers David Cameron and Grant Shapps participated. During the talks in Adelaide, both nations expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

They highlighted that over 1.4 million Palestinians sought refuge in the southern tip of Gaza after bombings, yet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched an attack there as well.

Both countries stressed the imperative need for a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, and the delivery of aid. Meanwhile, ceasefire negotiations are ongoing in Doha, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States.

Australia and the UK have made their stance clear ahead of the United Nations Security Council’s vote on a US-drafted resolution demanding a Gaza ceasefire, citing the escalating death toll and the impact of the conflict on both nations.

A ceasefire is being advocated to safeguard civilians and facilitate humanitarian aid. The two countries also emphasized that any agreement should include the release of those detained by Hamas in the October 7 attack.

As Israel’s violence nears the six-month mark, nearly 32,000 Palestinians have been killed.
