Hangzhou: India’s Shailesh Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu demonstrated India’s athletic prowess at the ongoing Asian Para Games, securing gold and silver medals, respectively, in the Men’s High Jump-T63 event on Monday.
Shailesh cleared an impressive 1.82m to clinch the gold medal, surpassing his compatriot and Asian record holder in Men’s High Jump-T42, Mariyappan, by 0.2m. Mariyappan secured the silver with a season-best attempt of 1.80m.
Earlier in the day, Prachi Yadav secured a silver medal in canoeing in the women’s VL2 Final, marking India’s debut in the medal tally. Prachi gave Uzbekistan’s Irodakhon Rustamova a tough competition, with both athletes being separated by a mere 1.022s.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also commended Mariyappan Thangavelu’s extraordinary talent and unwavering determination displayed in this event.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Shailesh’s exceptional performance serves as an inspiration to all, showcasing the results of determination and hard work.
